S29-Cockerel Badge

In the medieval period the cockerel was universally recognised as a symbol of lust and lechery, the young men of London reputedly wearing cockerel badges to advertise their virility.

The cockerel also has strong religious significance, being symbolic of vigilance; hence its common use as a weathervane, turning in all directions to watch for the powers of evil.

Original found in London.

14th-15th century.

19x20mm A Cockerel.
